In modern industry, temperature is not merely an environmental indicator, but a core critical factor for process stability and quality control. For example, in the manufacturing and testing of AI chips, the accuracy of temperature control directly affects the stability and lifespan of chip operation. Beyond the semiconductor industry, sectors like energy and environmental protection also rely on stable temperature sensing technology. Take solar water heaters, for instance: their operation depends on solar radiation heating the collector plate, which then transfers the heat to the water tank through heat pipes. However, without accurate temperature monitoring, it's difficult to control heating efficiency, and overheating could even damage pipes or the water tank. Furthermore, in variable weather or when sunlight is insufficient, the system must adjust its heating strategy in real time; these decisions all depend on stable and sensitive temperature measurement data.
While temperature sensing may seem simple, it actually faces numerous challenges, including extreme environments, high-speed response, and long-term stability. To meet diverse industrial needs, the two most common temperature measurement technologies are thermocouples and resistance temperature detectors (RTDs). Each has its advantages and different application scenarios.
We will delve into the principles, characteristics, and applications of these two technologies to help readers make the most appropriate judgment when making practical selections.
Thermocouple
A thermocouple is a temperature sensing element that uses the temperature difference at the junction of two different metal conductors to generate a voltage; this phenomenon is called thermocouple.Seebeck EffectWhen the two ends of a thermocouple are in different temperature environments, a tiny thermoelectric potential is generated between the metals. By measuring this voltage difference, the temperature can be calculated. Due to its simple structure, fast response, and high temperature resistance, thermocouples are widely used in various industrial environments, especially in high-temperature processes, systems with rapid dynamic temperature changes, or applications with limited installation space.
The biggest advantage of thermocouples is thatDurability and wide measurement rangeSome models can withstand extreme temperatures exceeding 1000°C, making them particularly suitable for environments such as metallurgical furnaces, boilers, and engine exhaust systems. Furthermore, they are relatively inexpensive, robustly constructed, and operate stably even under severe vibration or harsh conditions. However, thermocouples also have their drawbacks, such as…Measurement accuracy is not as good as RTDIt is susceptible to external electromagnetic interference and must be paired with a cold junction compensation circuit to correct the accuracy of the thermoelectric potential.
The following are severalCommon thermocouple modelsand its main characteristics:
| Thermocouple model | Conductor material | Temperature range (approximately) | Feature Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| K type | Chromium-nickel-aluminum-nickel | -200°C ~ 1260°C | The most common general-purpose type, inexpensive, oxidation-resistant, and fast-reacting. |
| J-type | Iron-copper-nickel | -40°C ~ 750°C | It has high precision but is prone to oxidation, and is suitable for vacuum or reducing atmospheres. |
| T-shaped | Copper-copper-nickel | -200°C ~ 370°C | Suitable for low-temperature environments, such as refrigeration or cold chain systems, with excellent stability. |
| Type E | Chromium-nickel-copper-nickel | -200°C ~ 900°C | It features high output voltage and excellent sensitivity, making it suitable for measurements requiring high resolution. |
| N-type | Nickel-chromium-silicon - Nickel-silicon | -200°C ~ 1300°C | Its high stability and antioxidant properties make it a common replacement for K-type in high-temperature processes. |
| R/S type | Platinum Antimony-Platinum | 0°C ~ 1600°C | High precision and long lifespan, but expensive, suitable for high-end scientific or semiconductor applications. |
Each type of thermocouple has different applicable temperature ranges and resistance to environmental interference due to differences in materials and thermoelectric potential. Type K thermocouples are the most common and are widely used in automated equipment and industrial furnace temperature control systems; while in applications requiring high accuracy and stability, such as semiconductor manufacturing processes and laboratory measurements, Type R or Type S thermocouples may be used.
In general, selecting the right thermocouple requires consideration of not only the temperature range, but also a comprehensive assessment of factors such as the operating environment, chemical resistance, reaction rate, and budget in order to maximize its effectiveness.

RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector)
A resistance temperature detector (RTD) is a sensor that measures temperature by utilizing the property that the resistance of a metal conductor changes with temperature. In RTDs, the most commonly used metal isPlatinumPlatinum's resistance to temperature is linearly stable and highly repeatable, making it suitable for precision temperature measurement. When the ambient temperature changes, the resistance value of platinum also changes; by measuring its resistance through a circuit, the actual temperature can be calculated.
The biggest advantage of RTD is thatHigh precision and good long-term stabilityTherefore, it is widely used in applications requiring high accuracy and long-term stability, such as food processing, medical equipment, semiconductor manufacturing processes, and laboratory equipment. Compared to thermocouples, RTDs have a slightly slower response speed and a smaller temperature range (typically between -200°C and 850°C), but their high accuracy and low drift characteristics make them the preferred choice for many automated control systems.
Common RTD models mainly include PT100 與 PT1000The differences are as follows:
| model | Resistance value at 0°C | Features and Applications |
|---|---|---|
| PT100 | 100 Ω | The most common standard RTD, with accurate measurements, is suitable for the vast majority of industrial applications. |
| PT1000 | 1000 Ω | A higher resistance value can reduce interference from wire resistance, making it suitable for long-distance transmission or low-power applications. |
Advantages of PT1000The high impedance reduces errors caused by conductor impedance, making it particularly suitable for use with two-wire connections or long transmission distances.PT100Due to its long history of application and wide range of support, it remains the most widely used RTD type in industry.
There are three main types of wiring methods for RTDs:2-wire, 3-wire and 4-wireThe differences are as follows:
| Wiring method | Feature Description |
|---|---|
| 2-line | The structure is the simplest, with only two wires connecting the RTD and the reading device, but the resistance of the wires directly affects the measurement error. |
| 3-line | Adding a third compensation line to offset the effect of conductor impedance on the result is the most common connection method in industry. |
| 4-line | The most precise wiring method completely eliminates the influence of wire impedance on resistance measurement and is commonly used in laboratories or high-precision measuring equipment. |
In practice, if the distance is short and the accuracy requirement is not high, a 2-wire system may be sufficient; most industrial control systems will choose a 3-wire system as a balance between accuracy and cost; and a 4-wire system will be chosen when extremely high accuracy is required.
In summary, RTDs are a highly stable and accurate temperature sensing method, suitable for process environments with high precision requirements and slow temperature changes. When selecting an RTD, in addition to considering PT100 or PT1000, it is also necessary to select an appropriate wiring method based on the wiring environment to maximize its measurement performance.
